About the Brand: ‘Budera’

(Strengthening Apple Value Chain in Harsil Valley)

Inhabiting the majestic high-altitude Himalayan landscape of the Gangotri region, ‘Budera’ is a small sheep/yak herding community known for its fine craftsmanship in weaving woollen products. The wool, which is naturally springy, resilient, and even flame-resistant, is derived from livestock they rear themselves. To change for the better, they have adapted Apple cultivation as a cash crop in 13 villages near Harsil, Uttarakhand since 1860, just after Mr. Wilson, a British resident introduced Vance Variety of apple in Uttarkashi district. The brand ‘Budera’ had emerged from the community and the farmer-participatory logo had been designed as well. Technical interventions were made by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in collaboration with the district administration – Uttarkashi and department of horticulture – Uttarkashi (Government of Uttarakhand).
